Access to safe water, Sanitation & Hygiene- (SWASH)
SAFE WATER, SANITATION & HYGIENE
One of the most pressing challenges our community faced was access to safe and clean water. For many years, the primary water source was a distant river. This river was not only far from several homes but also heavily exposed to contamination, resulting in frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases. The task of fetching water often fell on women and children, who had to walk long distances daily, putting their health and safety at risk.
To address this critical issue, we have successfully constructed a borehole that now provides clean and safe water to the entire community. This development has significantly improved health outcomes by reducing the prevalence of waterborne diseases. Moreover, the proximity of the borehole has relieved families of the physical burden and time constraints associated with fetching water. The availability of clean water has also enhanced daily domestic activities, such as cooking, cleaning, and caring for animals, while providing an essential resource for small-scale farming. The borehole has become a vital component in supporting our agroforestry initiatives, making it easier for community members to engage in tree planting and nursery development, especially during the holidays.
In our continued efforts to promote better sanitation and hygiene, we are planning to construct a modern, inclusive toilet and bathroom facility at our community center. This facility will be designed to meet the needs of all community members, including children and those with disabilities. It will play a crucial role in maintaining hygiene standards and preventing the spread of diseases. This initiative is particularly important for young girls, many of whom still experience fear and discomfort regarding menstruation due to the lack of proper sanitary facilities. By providing safe, private, and hygienic spaces, we aim to create an environment that empowers young girls to manage their periods with dignity and confidence.
These improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene are essential for the overall well-being of the community. Access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities contributes not only to better health but also to improved productivity and educational opportunities, as families and children can now focus on their development without the constant struggle for basic necessities.
While we have made significant progress, we continue to seek support to fully realize our goals. The construction of the inclusive toilet and bathroom facility, along with ongoing maintenance and expansion of our WASH initiatives, will require additional resources and partnerships. With your support, we can further enhance the quality of life for our community members by ensuring sustained access to clean water and sanitation, promoting health, hygiene, and environmental conservation for generations to come.
